The Trace Your Catch webpage was launched in September 2015 knowing that not all can codes in the marketplace or in people’s homes will be covered by the site. Given the scope of the tuna supply chain, the number of facilities involved, and the time required for materials to move through the supply chain from catch to finished product, not all Clover Leaf tuna products in the marketplace will be immediately available to be traced on the consumer website.
The Clover Leaf tuna supply chain is expansive, complex and diverse with the trace system and process now capturing trips and data from nearly 500 longline vessels and well over a 100 purse seine vessels operating in four ocean areas around the globe. Data is also collected for raw material that flows through a dozen loining facilities in six different countries, four international co-packers and a cannery in the United States.
The other possibility is that a code was typed in incorrectly, sometimes the ink-jetted characters are difficult to discern.
